The PieterPaul Brief

This was an incredibly fun and interesting explainer video to work on for PieterPaul. Using a unique range of colours and character designs, this stand-out animated explainer video did a fantastic job not only of communicating the value of PieterPaul’s offering, but also gives off a clear ‘arts & culture’ vibe too!

The team at PieterPaul have created a fantastic free digital guide to arts and culture venues and wanted an animated explainer video that quickly summed-up the value of their guide, but didn’t have a set idea of how they wanted the design style to look.

We love a chance to flex our creative design and animation skills, so we suggested making the style clearly ‘artsy’ to align with their ‘art and culture’ audience.

Step 1

Scriptwriting & Brainstorming

For PieterPaul, we handled the entire video-making process; this included Scriptwriting, voiceover recording, designs and animation.
First, to ensure the offering is clear and communicated well to the audience, we produced an engaging script which was lighthearted and concise. This is a great way to ensure you grab the viewer’s attention and quickly deliver key points.

Step 2

Voiceover

Once the team at PieterPaul we’re happy with the script, we helped them choose from our catalogue of talented voiceover artists, selecting one with the perfect tone and accent to accompany their explainer video. During this stage, we did a couple of trial-runs with the voiceover artist, to give the client an option on their preferred tone and pace for the reading, once we had agreed the best version, the final voiceover was recorded and it was on to the next step!

Step 3

Sketching Phase

Next, come the essential design and storyboard phases.
Step 4

Style sample

Here, we got to flex our design skills and present the client with character and element styles as well as a unique colour palette that was visibly ‘artsy’, which they loved!
Step 5

Graphic storyboard

This stage is crucial because it allows us to agree on the appearance of characters and settings before we begin to design (this saves lots of time in the long-run!).
Step 6

Animation

Once each character, scene and element were agreed upon, we began the animation process, injecting every scene with fluid movement, swashes of colour, bubbly characters (including a happy dog!) and elements such as pamphlets and an iPad displaying the PieterPaul app in action.
We finalised the video with some suitable backing music approved by the PieterPaul team to create one of our favorite animations to-date!
